Supreme Court Expert Says Roberts is a Good Choice for the High Court

NEW YORK, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- "John Roberts is respected among the judicial community for his probity and sense of fairness," according to Kermit L. Hall, editor of The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States. "He's respected among his conservative Republican colleagues for both balance and an acute awareness of the court in its traditions and history. And at the same time, he's not seen as an ideological ax grinder. I think all of those will very much work to his benefit in the confirmation process to come," said Hall.

However, Roberts' record arguing Supreme Court cases on behalf of the first President Bush and his ties to conservative groups indicate he will take the court to the right, said Kermit Hall, a historian and president of the State University of New York at Albany. "He solidifies the right spectrum of this court. He is unlikely to be a swing vote."

Kermit Hall is the president of the University at Albany and the author of over twenty books on legal history, of which The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States is the most recent. The book is a reader's guide to the Supreme Court, discussing past and present judges, their influence on the nation, and various major cases.
