Future Grim For Newly-weds, Hetro Marriage Ban May Offer Relief?
Married? Prepare for Divorce Just in Case Says New Book by Family Law Attorney
'Preparing for Divorce While Happily Married' Gives Candid View of What Really Happens During Divorce Proceedings and How to Navigate the Process
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- With nearly half of marriages ending in divorce, a Minneapolis attorney wants to educate people about the realities of the divorce process before it even begins.
"Statistics show that people are more likely to get a divorce than have their house burn down or get in an accident where their car is totaled -- both of which people have insurance against," said Jonathan Fogel. "I like to think of this book as 'divorce insurance' in the event the unthinkable occurs."
"Preparing for Divorce While Happily Married" is an intriguing, sometimes ugly, guide to the process of divorce. Not only does it offer practical information on things like choosing an attorney, alternatives to litigation and how to protect your assets, it also highlights little-known aspects of divorce, such as ensuring your soon-to-be ex-spouse doesn't retain a better attorney than you, and how not to behave during divorce proceedings.
"The reality is that nearly half of newlyweds will be divorced within seven years," Fogel said. "I have often thought of how much easier my job would be, and how much cheaper it would be for my clients, if they had prepared for their divorce while they were still married."
Fogel has been a family law attorney for more than 10 years and has handled hundreds of divorces, most of them involving the issue of child custody. He currently serves on a task force that provides education about the recent changes to Minnesota's child support laws.
The book also offers specific steps parents should take while still married to ensure the best outcome for their children.
"It's a huge challenge for parents going through a divorce to be able to maintain some perspective on what their kids need and how they will react to changes in the family," Fogel said. "My goal is to provide advice that prepares parents for the potential of a custody dispute."
