The ICWUC Local 45C workers union at the PPG Industrials plant in Natrium, WV began to strike on September 9th, 2005 due to an unfair offer from their company asking them to ratify a new work contract, which among other issues, would allow discrimination against newly hired employees. This offer is viewed by the union as an attempt to weaken the union membership by dividing them into two distinct groups; current employees and new employees hired after August 2005.
A union flyer distributed in New Martinsville, WV presents the union's perspective."To most, this might not seem like a big issue, because, after all, these employees have not been hired yet. But, in consideration of the differences in both wages and benefits for the new employees, it is not a good offer for the Ohio Valley, in general, offering only to provide lower paying jobs with less benefits. With the rising cost of living, we need more good paying jobs with good benefits, instead of going backwards and offering a starting wage that is more than 25% less that it was at least 8 years ago."
PPG Industries performance over the past few years shows it would have no problem working with the previous pay scale for current and future employees. In 2004 Net income for the company was up 35% from the previous year and record sales of 9.5 Billion. In 2005 an all time record sales of Chemical, which are produced by the Natrium Plant was up by 34%. In overall stock performance the cost per share has risen steadily from about $5 oer share in 1985 to about $75 per share in 2005.
